About Dickens on his 205th Birthday

Those of us who love the thought of Dickens, but not the actual reading of him may still be interested in knowing a bit more about him. The man who is best known for his 1834 novella, A Christmas Carol, was an international celebrity in his lifetime, famous for his biting satire and humorous observations of everyday life in 19th Century England.

His father was actually incarcerated in a Debtors' Prison when Dickens was growing up, and this made him a lifelong champion for the rights of Children and Education and social reform.

Dickens was born February 7th, 1812-so Happy 205th Birthday, Charles Dickens!

Happy Birthday Babe Ruth!

Happy 123rd Birthday Babe! Here's something about the legendary baseball player Babe Ruth you may not know…. Born George Herman Ruth,  at the age of seven he was sent to a reformatory where he learned to play baseball from one of the teachers.

At age 19, Ruth was playing ball for Jack Dunn, the owner of the Baltimore Orioles. He had to have a legal guardian sign for him to play, so Dunn became his guardian. The joke was that Ruth was now "Dunn's new babe." That's how Babe Ruth got his nickname. And on his death from cancer at age 53, Ruth remembered his past and how he got his start in life. He left most of his estate to the Babe Ruth Foundation for underprivileged children.
